Apartments are basically ready to rent; business space should be finished in about a month.

Employees of Kimes & Stone Construction Company employees tear out a concrete wall to make a new entrance for retail space being developed in a building on Main Street in Baldwyn. Two new loft apartments and two new retail spaces are set to join the Downtown Baldwyn landscape.

Earl Stone and Kimes and Stone Construction are completing work on two retail spaces in what formerly housed a dance studio, between the Baldwyn School District office and Pop & JoJo’s Attic. The mixed-use building was split into fourths, with the bottom floors housing two 2,200-square-foot business spaces and the top floor adding two new 2,200 loft apartments to downtown.

Stone’s son, Steve Stone, has taken on the completion of the buildings as Earl has his plate full with Kimes & Stone’s Construction business and projects in Mississippi and surrounding states.

“We plan to have the Downtown project completed in 30 days.” Earl Stone said.

The loft apartments are basically finished and ready to rent. Each apartment has 2,200 square feet. One apartment features a three-bedroom, two bath floor plan, while the other is a two-bedroom, two-bath floor plan. Each apartment comes furnished with all major appliances. There are a few small touches needed to have them ready to lease. Rent is expected to run about $1,000 per month.

As for the business spaces, Local Native is moving into the wood-façade space next to the Baldwyn Schools office. The new space will feature a large storefront for merchandise and design, dark room, wet room, bathroom and storage closet. Kayla Stone is the owner of Local Native.

“We have framed all the rooms and are now waiting for the walls to go up,” said construction contractor Randal Sample. “We still have some finishing touches to put on the front of the building.”

Work continues on the second commercial space. No tenant has been announced there yet, though Stone said there have been several prospective retail owners to show interest.

Stone has financed the construction work on the entire building.

“Mr. Stone has done so much for this town and the surrounding communities,” said Larry Owens, contractor. “Investing in the downtown area is important to him.”

For more information on the loft apartments and retail space available, call Kimes & Stone Construction, Inc. at 662-728-3501.
