Nine-year-old Lilly Floyd’s baking helps Asbury Methodist, Baldwyn First United Methodist provide toys for local children this Christmas

Thanks to the efforts of Lilly Floyd, Christmas will be brighter for other area children this year.

The first part of November marked the beginning of Lilly Floyd’s adventure in fundraising. Lilly is a local nine-year-old and attends Asbury Methodist Church. Her church of 80 members collaborated with Baldwyn First United Methodist Church’s Food Pantry Committee to provide toys to local children.

Lilly asked her mother, Christin Magers if she could sell teacakes to raise money for the children who needed toys for Christmas. Christin uses her late grandmother, Robbie Price Rowan’s teacake recipe. Many people in Baldwyn remember how delicious Robbie’s teacakes were.

Christin agreed to help Lilly make teacakes to raise funds. Word spread quickly of Lilly’s efforts to raise funds to buy toys for children. Orders for teacakes came almost faster than Christin could keep count. Business owners, local residents and customers of Christin’s beauty shop, Kuttin Korner, wanted teacakes or to make a donation to Lilly’s funds. What began as a little girl’s desire to help others became a huge success. Evenings after school and on weekends, Christin and Lilly were busy rolling out dough to make teacakes.

Each box of teacakes delighted Lilly as she knew some little boy or girl would be opening gifts that her teacake fundraiser provided.

“The sweet vanilla aroma of the teacakes filled our home, and Lilly became more excited with each batch of cookies we made,” Christin said.

Lilly and her mother made and sold 147 dozen teacakes. More than $600.00 was raised with teacake sales and donations given to help Lilly.

With the contributions from Lilly, members of both Asbury Church and First United Methodist Church, on Saturday, December 18th, 175 children received toys for Christmas.

“I never dreamed I could raise this much money,” Lilly said, “I am so happy that everyone helped me, and together we provided toys for lots of children.”

Lilly has three younger siblings, Hadley (sister) and Easton (brother), Magers and Marlee Magers (half-sister).
