The Bearcats (5-1) and Lady Cats (3-5) had plenty of time on the court this week. They had three games each, going a combined 3-3.
Baldwyn hosted the Doc Vandiver Classic on Saturday and it was loaded with great games. Bearcat fans were treated to a 15-plus point come-from-behind buzzer-beating three-point basket from the West Union boys to defeat New Site. Hatley and Red Bay, Ala. boys went into triple-overtime. But that was just getting things warmed up for the “Classic” that took place at the Classic.
Baldwyn and Shannon put on a thriller to end the night. Shannon started the contest on fire, hitting five three’s in the first quarter to hold a 27-9 lead over the Bearcats. Then the “Heart of a Bearcat” kicked in. Baldwyn stormed back in the second quarter holding Shannon to only four points to tie the game at the half, 31-31.
After many second-half lead changes, the Bearcats finally sealed the victory over the Red Raiders, 61-59.
Baldwyn was lead in scoring by senior Connor McKay with 18 points. Senior Coby Agnew, who received the Magnolia Hoops Player of the Game, had 17 points going 11 out of 13 from the freethrow line.
Agnew also had the daunting task of holding the electric Rocquis Coleman, Shannon’s top rated senior. Agnew also accomplished this task of holding Coleman to only 14 points by playing the entire fourth quarter with four fouls.
Other scorers for the Bearcats were junior Felix Hayes with 15, senior Casey Cagle with 6, junior Armontie Price with 3 and junior C.J. McGaha with 2.
“This was a big team win, everyone was accepting and doing their jobs.” Coach Craven explained. “I’m really proud of the team for not giving up and playing as a team.”
